Sleep Dentistry in Brisbane

At Fortitude Valley Dentist, we know some patients may become anxious when thinking about their upcoming procedure. Often, their anxiety is due to hearing frightening stories or less than ideal dental experiences in the past. This fear can be difficult to overcome, and years of avoiding dental appointments has only made the situation worse.

While our staff makes every effort to ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible, it might not be enough to reassure you. If you suffer from dental anxiety or phobia, sleep dentistry may be the answer for your dental care.

We Offer Two Options

Done in the surgery. The patient receives medication through their vein to feel relaxed during treatment. Also known as twilight sedation, anxiety is significantly reduced, and the patient will experience a deep state of calm and relaxation. Most patients remain conscious, typically, and are able to respond to verbal instructions while in this dream-like state.

Recovery is faster, and the patient may leave with a responsible adult after their procedure is done.

For extreme dental phobia, or when several procedures must be performed during the same visit, general anaesthesia is suggested. The patient is fully unconscious while the dentist performs his tasks. If two or more hours are needed, this is the best way to handle cases where extreme phobia exists.

After the procedures have been completed, all patients must go through the recovery room protocols before being allowed to leave the hospital.

For both procedures, you will not have any memory of the procedure. You’ll be able to just enjoy your beautiful new smile!

Treatments

When a patient has severe dental phobia, any procedure can seem terrifying. The most common treatments sleep dentistry is requested for are root canals, extractions, implants, wisdom tooth removal, and cosmetic procedures.

Sedation dentistry is also a good option for people with a hypersensitive gag reflex, which makes it difficult to perform some procedures.

What are the Benefits?

Sleep dentistry helps calm nerves and reduce anxiety while the dentist performs the necessary procedures. In some cases, the condition of the patient’s teeth requires multiple procedures, which would typically require several appointments. With sedation dentistry techniques, our dental staff is able to perform all needed dental work during one appointment, reducing the patient’s stress.

Procedures done under general anaesthesia require special approval. Dr Asad has already been approved, and Dr David is awaiting approval.
